PHILLIP R. LANGER, M.D. is an orthopedic surgeon with three fellowships: Sports Medicine/Arthroscopy, Complex Orthopedic Trauma, Hip Arthroscopy. He completed a Sports Medicine/Arthroscopy Fellowship under the guidance of F. Harlan Selesnick, M.D – Head Team Physician NBA Miami Heat – and an Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital.   In addition, Dr. Langer has completed an Arthroscopy Association of North America Fellowship in Arthroscopic Hip Surgery with Marc Phillipon, MD. – recognized worldwide as a pioneer of hip arthroscopy.  Dr. Langer is himself acknowledged as an expert in shoulder, hip, and knee surgery – since 2006 repeatedly chosen by his peers to teach shoulder, hip, and knee surgery at the national/international level by the Arthroscopy Association of North America amongst other entities. Dr. Langer has a special interest in hip problems – performing minimally invasive techniques to treat various hip problems in young, active patients. He is a former Assistant Team Physician and Orthopedic Surgeon for the NHL Atlanta Thrashers and NFL Atlanta Falcons. Common problems treated:   

  • SHOULDER: Fractures. Dislocations/Separations. Rotator Cuff Repair. Labral Repair. Instability. Biceps Ruptures/Tendonitis.
  • ELBOW: Fractures. Dislocation.Tommy John Surgery (UCL Reconstruction). Tennis Elbow.  Biceps Ruptures.
  • HIP:  Hip ArthroscopyFemoral Acetabular Impingement (FAI).  Labral Tears. Snapping Hip.  Cartilage Disorders.
  • KNEE: Fractures. Ligament (ACL, PCL) Reconstruction.  Cartilage Repair/Restoration. Total/Partial Replacement.  Tendon Repair. Realignment Osteotomy. 
  • ANKLE: Fractures. Tendon/Ligament Repair. Instability. Cartilage Repair/Restoration.    

DR. LANGER earned his Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, where he graduated cum laude in 1996.  

DR. LANGER received his Master of Science Degree in 1997 in Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. He earned his Medical Degree in 2001 from Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C.  

DR. LANGER is sub-specialty trained in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery, Hip Arthroscopy, and Orthopedic Trauma having completed three Fellowships following his residency training at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. In 2007, he completed a Fellowship in Orthopedic Trauma at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, one of the busiest Level I Trauma Centers in the country.  Subsequently, in 2007 he completed a Fellowship in Arthroscopic Hip Surgery sponsored by the Arthroscopy Association of North America with Marc Phillipon, MD. – internationally recognized as a pioneer of hip arthroscopy.   Prior to arriving in Atlanta, he completed a Fellowship in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery at the Miami Sports Medicine Program at Doctor’s Hospital, Miami, Florida in 2008 under the direction of F. Harlan Selesnick, M.D – Head Team Physician NBA Miami Heat

DR. LANGER has more than 15 publications and 25 national and international presentations on various topics in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery such as Tommy John elbow ligament surgery (ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction), catastrophic neck injuries in contact sport athletes, snowboarder ankle fractures, knee ligament injuries in athletes, and the treatment of cartilage injuries.  He has been selected by the Board of Trustees of the American College of Sports Medicine to serve as a symposium Chair on the treatment of complex knee injuries in the athlete. Additionally several times each year he serves as an instructor in shoulder, hip and knee surgery at the national/international level for the Arthroscopy Association of North America.   

DR. LANGER has served as an Associate Team Physician of the Miami Heat NBA Basketball Team, Providence Bruins AHL Hockey Team, Miami Jai Lai, Dania Jai Lai, Sony Ericsson WTA Tennis Tour, and Brown University Collegiate Sports Teams. In addition he has provided sports medicine coverage for the AVP Beach Volleyball Tour, Toronto Blue Jays MLB Baseball Team, and numerous high school football teams.  His memberships include the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, and the American College of Sports Medicine.
